If you have questions about what the Stanley numbers are, you can
look the planes up on Blood&Gore:
https://supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0.htm
Sometimes, emails to/from me are vectored to some cyber black
hole, never reaching their destination. I answer all emails, so if
you haven't heard from me, your/my email is likely having high tea
in said black hole, never to be heard from, so please try again.
If there is anything in particular that you're after, do ping me
as there is a lot of stuff here that isn't on the list; the list
just represents a snapshot of the previous month's haul with none
of the stuff having appeared on a previous list. I like to keep
things fresh here.
Please email me prior to sending money so that you can be sure
the item is still up for grabs. Also, prices do not include shipping,
which is the amount that it takes to go from me to you via the US
Post Office.
This list goes out to many people, normally on the first Monday
of the month (unless otherwise noted above). So, if you see something
you want, it's the quickest finger on the trigger that wins the duel.
Some folks become upset that they miss out on a tool. I wish I had
lots of this stuff many times over so I can satisfy the demand, but
that is normally not the case. Some of it does have duplicates here,
and if so, I will state that in my reply to you.
Also, due to the nature of selling over the wires, tools are sold
on a first come, first serve basis. The first person to say "I'll
take it", gets it. I have to operate this way as some will take a
few days to get back to me with their interest in a particular item,
and it's unfair to keep others waiting who are willing to buy the
item immediately.
I reserve the right to correct typographical errors after the list
goes out. I rarely make them, but when I do they can be major ones.
If you're the kind of person who puts a straightedge to the sole of
a #40, to check it for flatness, or who tosses a plane on a scale to
weigh it against what it states in the Stanley catalogs, you'll need
to take your business elsewhere. I'll wish you luck finding perfection
in something that was never made, nor intended to be, perfect. You guys
know who you are, and it's best for both of us that our paths not cross.
Lastly, and I don't like to mention this, but if you tell me that
money is on the way for something you want, and you never make good
on it, we won't be doing business in the future. It's unfair, actually
downright discourteous, to others who want the same thing, and I tell
them it's sold. Pull this on me, and you're exorcised from the list.
Sorry, but I don't tolerate this behavior well at all.
Don't forget the cool new tools that I'm making - a jazzy layout
knife being used by professionals (made the cover of Feb.1998 FWW!),
a detachable block plane handle designed to fit your standard pitch
block planes, a killer Robinson's Improved Patent sliding bevel, a
tilting jaw for your Emmert's vise, and the finest bench plane in
production today, the Bed Rock #601. You can see it all at:

Remember, you don't have to be a connoisseur (did I spell that
correctly) to shop here. You can be a wirehead, a metalhead, a zipper-
head, a propellerhead, a deadhead, a cokehead, or even a knuckle
dragging oaf, just like me, to shop here, as long as your dinero is
green.
Thanks for shopping, and remember that no letters or words were
injured when writing this list...
FEATURED TOOL OF THE MONTH
******** **** ** *** *****
FT1 It was inevitable that the full-time role of the tool
protege holding the featured tool would have the curtain
closed, that time has now come far too fast for us as he's
off to college to get educated (they tried real hard to
do that in grades K-12, but like a proper gearhead
yearning for twin-turbos and Cobb accessports, he finds
tools, cars, and gizmos much more appealing than he does
being a citizen of the world and criminalizing plastic
straws); he may make an encore on future lists from
time to time, this assuming he doesn't find a girl or keg
that interests him more than his Bridgeport and Snap-on
torque wrench; holding an unusual screw arm plough plane,
this one abandoned the usual wooden body for a cast iron
one, likewise the fence, both retaining their original
maroon finish; no doubt manufactured, a couple others
have surfaced, if there could be a transitional plough
plane category, this one would be at the center of it;
in fine, never messed with condition, most of the finish
remains, it has the original large brass depth stop that's
set with a thumb screw; arms are secured with a screw from
below, just like on the wooden examples, a inlaid rectang-
ular brass plate is at the top of the arms, an owner neatly
stamped his name in those; a very nice thing, the nicest of
its kind I've seen, and ready for a collection of plow
planes and/or odd manufactured planes:

MS24 12" mahogany spirit level stamped Mayes Bros. Tool Mfg. Co

all three vials are original and liquid, one is set at 45
degrees; dry surface, never cleaned, and the first I can recall
seeing; bottom left:

MS27 Unused lignum vitae joiner's mallet; with trapezoidal shape

lignum, it will never split unless you're banging slicks

brand, they will work on the #45 and #55 equally well; 12

good alternative for taking your favorite combination plane
places never visited before and at a reasonable price;

MS33 Patented honing strop; a neat thing, with a lot of character,
it has a unique aquatic theme about it; the protective sheath
is stamped with a fish (looks more like a salmon than it does
a coelacanth); a Philadelphia, PA patent by, wait for it, a
Joseph S. Fisher, it's stamped with his name and the December
24, 1877 date, this info adjacent to the outline of the fish,
and the letters "ER" stamped within the outline (how clever
is that?); with most of the original decal that is printed
with the simple instructions, this is a double side strop
that measures 11 1/2" long (a real measurement, not a fisher-
man's measurement); a very cool thing, in my opinion, if
you're going to own a strop, this is the one to own;

MS42 Larger hatchet or axe with a shorter handle; this one has
a head that's over two times the mass of a standard hatchet,
it should have a handle twice as long as what's on it, it
hasn't been cut down and is original; a very well made tool,
there's no maker's mark I can see, I don't believe it saw
any use; made for serious chopping, it probably was offered
this way for finer control when swinging it with two hands;

line of planes that flopped perfectly in the tool market as

of travel, you can see it's made with a perfect taper to
cut the hole; as found, original turned handle, showing
normal signs of wear/use, it has a lead screw to start
the thing; hole at top casting to allow shavings to
escape (noted in the patent), the cutting portion is
attached to the same casting (also noted in the patent);

MS65 Hutchinson October 16, 1929 exploding wedge; were it really
a wedge that exploded, not too many of these would be around,

where heads explode when the New England Patriots beat the
Pittsburgh Steelers, this thing is loaded with powder and
then is driven into wood, a stump, rock, etc.; a fuse is
inserted into the cylinder, which gives new meaning to the
Class C fireworks warning of place on ground, light fuse,
get away; in fine shape, it doesn't appear to have 'sploded
much over its life; 12" long, this uncommon tool must have
been cursed as its patent was awarded just 13 days before
the stock market exploded; if you plan to use this thing,
you take full responsibility of the consequences, it's being
sold as a collectible not a working toy to satisfy that
inner child that never grew up inside you; middle:

axes, it's in fine shape; everyone knows they have a friend
in Pennsylvania, or so their license plates claim, not many
know you also have an axe in Pennsylvania, many of them in
this catalogue; left:

MS101 Odd Preston No.1364 1/2 Irish pattern chariot plane; at
first glance this one looks like any other example made
by Preston, but it has notable differences; at 7 1/2"
long, it's a bit shorter than the usual examples; the
cheeks terminate roughly 1" from the nose, giving the
side profile a stepped look; the most unusual feature
is the mouth is formed with a separate piece of metal
which is secured with two countersunk screws where the
cross-rib forms, this is original to the plane as there
are remnants of the original orange finish in the screw
slots and at the back of the piece of metal that forms the
mouth; this must have been done to make a finer mouth,
which required more handwork; wedge and body are stamped
with same assembly number, the iron doesn't have that,
it also isn't stamped with the Preston name, it fits the
plane perfectly; top right:

ville where single forgings and applied wood grips was
in everyone's glass; 3/4" width, the back is marked with
Wood Tool Co. and the four patent dates, roughly 1/4"
of that was removed by an overzealous flat chisel'er; a
design that was acquired by Stanley to become their
Everlasting line, this is the early production prior to
Stanley's purchase; 10 1/4" long, some very shallow
pitting near edge, this one is more for the collectors
than the users; most Wood's chisels are stamped on the

wedge and tote; made in Pittsburgh, PA ca.1840, roughly
a dozen of these planes are know; 20" long, the casting

MS151 Norlund "CAMPER" axe; larger than the common hatchets,
this as found example has a hint of the original bronze
finish, CAMPER is stamped in script on the other side;
original handle is taped, which offers a clue that the
owner of this axe probably didn't camp too much to learn

fine quality worker; bottom:

MS152 Disston D15 rosewood handle Victory saw; despite what

MS154 Metallic Plane Co. jointer; the Auburn, NY company was one
of the fairly successful early competitors to Stanley, their
planes are like no other with a unique design, their bench
planes had corrugated soles as standard issue; several de-
signs were offered by the company, this example is their
simplest adjustable example, a lever engages a hole in the
cap iron nut to set the iron, a design that Stanley later
kinda sorta copied for their Liberty Bell line of planes;
all original parts, no damage other than the tote's horn
sheared long ago, the japanning is redone; dusty from
sitting idle; middle:
https://supertool.com/forsale/aug/t98.jpg $185.00
MS155 Log caliper with old walking wheel; a very clean example of
a tool used to scale logs, the caliper is stamped "The Maine
Log Scale" to differentiate it from other methods, the wheel
is removable from the caliper probably to make it more com-
pact while not in use; the wheels were often added to the
calipers later, the patina on all the wood suggests this one
had the wheel right from the start; the jaws measure the
diameter of log and wheel is used to determine the length,
with those two numbers known, the stamped tables yield the
quantity of board feet; many wheels are reproductions (and
aged by sneaky tool dealers to be sold as originals), this
one is original, the two items have a ca.1950 appearance to
them; one of the classics of old tools, many collectors have
one of these high on their most wanted list, this one is a
unique take on the classic design; top:

MS156 K&E No.4220 (or 4230 - I can't figure the difference)
planimeter; early production, it's serial number 530, and
has an inspection label that's inked with the date 11/7/98;
in fine shape and in the original case, it saw barely any
use, it's a less commonly found model, and is the first
I've encountered in decades of very active tooling; Amsler
style, the thing is used to measure areas of two dimensional
shapes, a common application is to determine the output of
steam engines after an indicator generates a graph; this
is a nice thing; top:

MS157 Starrett combination square on a 24" rule; very clean,
vial is working, scribe parted company long ago (your 12"

pieces slide over each other so that when the wood is
inserted the pieces squeeze it in place; patented 1919,

in Westfield, NJ; as found, free of damage, it's a great
aid for planing smaller stuff that is otherwise too
awkward to secure in a vise; top right:

MS181 Book, "Woodwork Joints" by Charles Hayward of England;
hardcover, with dust jacket, 1963 printing, the photo on

shows joinery, hand tool use, etc. on its 176 pages, no
one simplified woodworking for the masses like Hayward;

rule by any maker, this one has complex tables for dividing

especially so by the Unionville, Connecticut maker that is
more know for the odd patented plane than the rules they
made; in fine shape, both alignment pins, and a small knock
in the wood near the arch as the only apology; bottom:
