If you have questions about what the Stanley numbers are, you can
look the planes up on Blood&Gore:

Sometimes, emails to/from me are vectored to some cyber black
hole, never reaching their destination. I answer all emails, so if
you haven't heard from me, your/my email is likely having high tea
in said black hole, never to be heard from, so please try again.
Please email me prior to sending money so that you can be sure
the item is still up for grabs. Also, prices do not include shipping,
which is the amount that it takes to go from me to you via the US
Post Office.
This list goes out to many people, normally on the first Monday
of the month (unless otherwise noted above). So, if you see something
you want, it's the quickest finger on the trigger that wins the duel.
Some folks become upset that they miss out on a tool. I wish I had
lots of this stuff many times over so I can satisfy the demand, but
that is normally not the case. Some of it does have duplicates here,
and if so, I will state that in my reply to you.
Also, due to the nature of selling over the wires, tools are sold
on a first come, first serve basis. The first person to say "I'll
take it", gets it. I have to operate this way as some will take a
few days to get back to me with their interest in a particular item,
and it's unfair to keep others waiting who are willing to buy the
item immediately.
I reserve the right to correct typographical errors after the list
goes out. I rarely make them, but when I do they can be major ones.
If you're the kind of person who puts a straightedge to the sole of
a #40, to check it for flatness, or who tosses a plane on a scale to
weigh it against what it states in the Stanley catalogs, you'll need
to take your business elsewhere. I'll wish you luck finding perfection
in something that was never made, nor intended to be, perfect. You guys
know who you are, and it's best for both of us that our paths not cross.
Remember, you don't have to be a connoisseur (did I spell that
correctly) to shop here. You can be a wirehead, a metalhead, a zipper-
head, a propellerhead, a deadhead, a cokehead, or even a knuckle
dragging oaf, just like me, to shop here, as long as your dinero is
green.
Thanks for shopping, and remember that no letters or words were
injured when writing this list...
FEATURED TOOL OF THE MONTH
******** **** ** *** *****
FT1 I receive some very odd emails, and the first image below
was attached to a recent one; doing some forensic exam-
ination of email headers, I found it originated from a
state penitentiary's (which shall remain anonymous) wood-
working shop; after forwarding it to that state's depart-
ment of prisons, I was told it was a cryptic way of asking
for files as part of a plot to break out of the big house;
I must have been mistaken for a prisoner's pen pal, this is
such an odd coincidence and oblique homonym as this month's
featured tool is a group of 53 Pfeil Swiss Made carving
chisels which look to be unused; accumulated by a elderly
gentleman, he got more joy out of buying them than he did
using them; all sorts of patterns and widths, they are
photographed in groups so you can see what's stamped in the
handles; best quality, they can be honed and used as is;
the larger sculptural gouges are listed in the miscellaneous
tools section; there's enough here to make you a master
carver overnight, or just look like one; a few have some
minor tarnish spots:

difficult to find; one of the rarest models of the plane

WOOD PLANES

mark I don't recognize, it has "1500" within an oval; can
honed and used as is; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/apr/t5.jpg $110.00
WP2 3/8" ogee by D.Malloch; another very clean and little used
worker that can be honed and used as is; top right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/apr/t5.jpg $95.00

inking of the profile; owner mark, can be honed and used as
is; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/apr/t5.jpg $95.00
WP4 Pair of side rounds by Iohn Green; later period, the mark
is very weak; planes saw little use, owner mark, each can
be honed and used as is; compliment hollow and round planes
for the times a quarter section is needed for cove and
astragal, etc. profiles; top two:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/apr/t6.jpg $135.00
WP5 Another Iohn Green, this a bit earlier with broad flat
chamfers on a 7/8" quirk ogee and astragal; still with
original inking on the heel, it's in fine shape given its
late 1700's manufacture; owner mark, a crack in the boxing
well behind the mouth; bottom:

http://www.supertool.com/forsale/apr/t6a.jpg $125.00
WP6 I.Sleeper double cockbead; cuts the classic cockbeads with
a broad fillet between them, this would have been used on
the rails of a carcass that separate the drawers; an un-
common profile, the iron is steeply pitch to work on the
exotic woods in common use on the fine furniture being made
during the Federal era, roughly 1785-1810; in fine shape,
free of alteration, owner initials, never altered:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/apr/t7.jpg $175.00
WP7 3/8" astragal; perhaps by Iohn Green, an owner left his

in sound worker shape:

WP8 Uncommon smaller Preston chamfer plane with the unique iron
where the 'cap iron" acts as a box to set the working width;
4 1/2" long, in fine shape, owner mark, it's a clever design
and one of many from a land that has a peculiar obsession
with different ways to work a chamfer; bottom right:

WP9 Five bead planes by Birch; good, as found workers, the four
narrowest are slipped (the stop can be removed so the plane
can work deeper into the wood, a feature that useful when
making custom profiles with hollows and rounds); diameters

are ideal for cabinetwork; owner mark, dry finish, a few
harmless dings in the boxing; left:

the only modification is a small hole bored above the depth
stop's thumb screw, the hole is tapped as an owner must have
wanted to be certain the depth stop was properly secured;
some ancient roughness along the bottom edge of the fence,
a negligible chip off the side of the wedge finial, this
is a nice example that is free of chipping about the arm
mortices and shows no splitting at the heel, the arms have
the typical shinkage cracks about the rivets, those are
almost inevitable; top:

that has no maker mark (but owner initials), it's no doubt
a professionally made plane likely for a retailer to put
the company's name on it; nickeled finish on all the hard-
ware indicates this is no ordinary plane, the washers are
rosewood; appears to be a New England maker, this one is
in fine worker shape, the threads show no real signs of
chipping, the boxwood has a nice patina to it; a fine worker
with a single iron, it's way above the average of what's
normally found; set of cutters adjacent to it can be found

where the tote is set lower on the stock for more comfort-

WP31 Odd Kennedy/Hartford deep square, Grecian cove, astragal,

pairs, with #1R, #4H, #7R, #8H, #12R, #14R, #15H, #16H, and

The Gentleman's and Cabinetmaker's Director first published
in 1754; a revolutionary design book that took England and

volume is Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinetmaker and Upholsterer's
Drawing Book of 1802, another designer with great influence
in furniture and accessories; both ex-library, the covers
show normal wear, the latter volume has some loose pages;
with prefaces by Arthur Hayden, the original books were
used by wealthy clients to be on the cutting edge of design,
one other, George Hepplewhite, also made a design book
prior to Sheraton, that volume is not with these; much less
costly than the originals, they are the standard references
for the furniture of their respective eras:

important year of world history where the US capital and

real example and not a forgery as the numbers used to stamp
the date are the same used to stamp the graduations, it's
clearly done but my camera is having a tough time with it;
in fine shape, a bit of separation of the separate forgings
that form the legs, it's still fully functional, should you

MS101 Massive chopping/felling axe, the Elwell No.7; made in
England at a time when trees were safe from such a beast
as it's way larger than needed there since the big trees
were nearly extinct; in fine shape, handle is old, but
may not be original, if you can't fell a redwood in five
chops with this one, the fault is yours, not the axe's;
one might believe that Lizzie Borden's step-ma and pa would
have survived the raging attack if Lizzie had this one in
hand, but one shot in the breadbasket by this would do more
damage than 40 or 41 whacks, assuming young Lizzie could
even swing this beast but once; top:

MS102 Classic English bearded axe; in my opinion, the nicest
axe pattern of any English axe, it's a side axe that is
used to remove the bulk of waste prior to finer tools;
5 1/2", in sound worker shape, the original handle parted
company long ago, some numbnuts put a standard length
axe handle on it, which needs to be removed (or docked)
to make this work as it's design; middle:

of Worcester, MA; living not far from Wormtown, this is
the first I've seen so it's gotta be rare; good embossing,
head shows slight mushrooming, original fawn's foot handle
is present but shows splitting at end; embossed axe lovers
can make these things shine, I think it's best to let it
be what it is, a veteran of the wood vs. axe wars that
carried on for centuries in New England; bottom:

polished, very minor check about the brass plating on the
fence, clearly stamped with Mathieson name, it's a true
Mathieson, not a Suffolk Mathieson; owner mark in wood,
normal scuffs, a quality worker; top right:

MS116 Chaplin's Patent No.3 size smoothing plane; earlier pro-
duction, with nickel plated cast knob and tote, this is
the classic pattern of a nicely designed plane that gave
Stanley a run for the money; free of damage, normal wear
to the finishes, all original parts, I can't see if the
iron is marked with the Tower&Lyon name due to the tarnish,
not all are; a respectable model in a less common size;

MS117 Unique track level made by L.H.Witherell for 15" rails,
the narrowest of the standard railroad sizing, this very
narrow gauge was made for use on estates, small farms,

butt within the rails so that a consistent spacing of
15" results, adjusting screw at one end allows keeping
the two rails level with each other; original vial, the
brass plate is hand stamped with maker's name, a badly
tattered tag, which couldn't be saved, stated it was
for Witherell's tracks in Lexington, MA; most railroad
levels are long and ugly, this one is far from that;

MS120 Union X4C corrugated smoothing plane; a cleaner than usual
example with no damage, the rosewood tote looks to be a
Stanley replacement; embossed with patent date, it has the
Lakeside name stamped in the iron, I've seen several such

Lakeside at the next United Union of the Union Brotherhood

Holtzappfel tool rolls, it features a common style hand
vise fit to the bronze casting that allows it to be secured
at a bench; very well made, pre-WWI English manufacture,
the large wing nut has a blue finish on it, which differs
from the patina of the vise itself, it appears to be a
replacement from another vise, but is the proper shape and
size; a very nice thing, the jaws are 1 1/4"; a very un-
common tool; bottom left:

MS136 Rix Roll Rule; something I can't recall seeing before, it
looks more like an oilcan than it does as rule; a very
strange thing, it uses a color coded line that determines
and approximate length; embossed on the side are range
lengths mapped to a color; e.g., 0-10 is black, 10-20 is
red, 20-30 is yellow, etc., for 9 colors total; what a
stupid idea, especially if you're color blind or the line
breaks, it appears that line is original to this thing;
aluminum casting, has a ca.1950 appearance, if you're into
tape measures, or stupid things, this one is for you; a
new twist on rickrolling; bottom left:

MS183 Disston 16" No.7 8pt crosscut; found with previous, it may
have been used once and then put away; with label around

handle, which no doubt occurred form storage, it's still
nearly new; an uncommon size; middle:

MS184 Disston 22" No.7 10pt crosscut; maybe used once and put
away, original glazing is present as are most of the

MS186 New old stock glue pot with original bright green label;
embossed cover on the double boiler, the label states
that it's "The Eureka Family Glue Pot" along with "Howe's
Patent April 16, 1872"; apart from some staining on the
label, this one managed to survive in great shape, it's
a wonder how that happened especially when families were
much larger back then than they are today, odds favor an
obstreperous boy would have lit this one up sooner or
later; a great wee pot that's probably for the collector,
in case it isn't obvious, the family that glues together,
sticks together; bottom right:

MS192 Bronze layout tool for machine tool and mill gear wheels;
by R.Wright of Glossop, England, an area known for its
cotton mills, this amazing 16 1/2" tool was assisted that
trade by making the geared parts in the machinery; double
side, with scales on each, the rule sits on three 'feet'
on either side; thick legs, it looks to be ca.1850, and
in fine shape, the images fail to capture how nice this
tool is, it has detailed and decorative engraved motifs
that suggest it's from the hand of an instrument maker,
one who made transits, compasses, etc.; a great thing
that represents well the English fascination with making
a rule/scale for everything; top:

an arrowhead-like end that looks more like a bearing
scraper than a chisel to my western eyes; with original
label, the only word I can read, IYOROI, it's about 21"
long; you know what this is, I don't, but I do know that
the vigilant TSA wouldn't allow it in carry-on luggage;
